Rafael's childhood in the then vibrant 1970s of Venezuela offered a unique mix of colliding worlds and generations. Rafael, now the parent of two teenagers who are about to leave the house, re-explores his own experience of leaving the country of his childhood in the late 1980s to start a new life in the USA. Using personal family films, family photos, narration, and an original musical score, in "My Emo Life" Rafael constructs an organic collage that simultaneously looks at the past, the present, and the future. Through the use of memories, observation, and imagination the story spans the period between 1905 and 2015, and travels through Eastern Europe, North Africa, South and North America. The story that emerges is both a reflection of his role as a father and husband, but also a quest for clues from ancestors, and a poetic exploration into the meaning of place, and belonging. Themes of generational and geographical displacement are prevalent, as are concepts of familial continuity, and of aging, all explored with the loving gaze of someone looking to understand their place in the context of a modern day family. https://rafaelattias.com/Academia Tue, 06 Nov 2018 18:16:24 +0000 Rafael Attias https://rafaelattias.com/Academia Academia As a multi-disciplinary educator, artist, designer, and curator, I work in diverse fields, navigating the spaces between learning, education, design, and fine art practice, often searching for where these worlds intersect. As an educator, I've been faculty at Rhode Island School of Design since 1998, teaching in the departments of Illustration, Graphic Design and Digital+Media. I've lead several interdisciplinary partnered studios and research initiatives. Recently, I was part of the faculty team that lead the Spring 2021 Hyundai+RISD Research Collaborative on Adaptive Ecologies: Envisioning Futures. In the Summer of 2021, I was faculty lead for the Hyundai+RISD Fellowship Collaborative, as well as the Curator for the RISD+Hyundai physical exhibition of “Adaptive Ecologies: Building on Nature’s Blueprint.” In 2010 I developed the content and co-taught an ESPN sponsored studio on “Fandom.” In 2011 I was a guest presenter at the James S. McDonnell Foundation Workshop on Artists Envision Science &amp; Technology, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. In 2012 I developed and co-taught “Bay In Flux” a course for the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). During the summer of 2014, I participated as a lead researcher in the Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) and The Nature Lab hosted Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) program. A collaborative installation between artists Rafael Attias and Mikhail Mansion for the Pixilerations v.8 festival at Sol Koffler Gallery in Providence, RI.Poetry for nature's sonic dreams - a chance to imagine those things that surround us in coinciding periods and waves. We ask "are we in concert with nature's patterns, or have we lost touch with its innate pulse?" In this collaborative work, we explore a hidden dimension of connectedness by linking natural growth to sonic images being generated from subtle energy.
